Genre Analysis (Action) - BFI Statistical Yearbook

BFI Statistical Yearbook - Genre Information

In order to collate quantitive data on the 'Action' genre, I have referred to the BFI Statistical Yearbook Information from 2014; as the large quantities of data represented would be far beyond my ability to collect.

In the words of the BFI, it 'presents in one place all the available statistics on UK film and the UK film industry.’

Analysis of the Action Genre within statistics:

It is clear from the statistics of the highest grossing box office genre's that Action ranked first within both tables.
  • It grossed more than £393.9 million, which was higher than any other genre; amounting to 30.3% of all box office profits.
  • 'Spectre' was the top-performing action title of 2015, and the highest performing film of 2015.
  • Action was also the highest earning genre for UK qualifying films (39% of total box office from 9% of releases).
  • It was the fourth most common genre of film to be made in 2016, amounting to 9.5% of all releases.
  • Five of the ten highest grossing ‘12A’ classified films were Actions.
  • This depicts that there is demand for action films as it was the highest grossing genre of 2015, alluding that it entices the British public.

Significance
Action films are undoubtedly very popular with the British public; there is clearly a lot of demand for Action films. However, we need to bear in mind that the majority of the most successful Action films of 2015 were comparatively more ‘mainstream’ than the film we intend to produce. Spectre was the most successful Action of 2015; however, the film we intend on making falls more into the thriller action category and therefore we have to consider how to cater for our target audience, to provide an engaging Action film that in certain aspects differ from the Mainstream box office productions.

The Registrar General's Social Scale
The Registrar General’s Social Scale is the way the British Government defines the populace through their occupation:

A benefit of the Registrar General’s Social Scale is that it can help companies to target audiences. However, the scale has been criticised for being both crude and rigid.
